Department of Pharmacognosy

The Department of Pharmacy, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan, was established in 1974 at the Institute of Chemistry, Allama I. I. Qazi Campus, University of Sindh, Jamshoro. The department was shifted to its present building on the Indus Highway in 1984. In August 1999, the Department of Pharmacy was upgraded to the Institute of Pharmacy and was subsequently upgraded to the Faculty of Pharmacy on 2 May 2005. The Faculty initially comprised four departments: Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Pharmaceutics.

Initially, the department offered a four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharmacy) degree program. However, from the 2004 academic session, the nomenclature of the degree was changed to Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.), and the program was extended to five years comprising ten semesters.

The Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, contributes four theory courses along with their respective laboratory courses to the five-year Pharm. D. program. The department also offers postgraduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the field of Pharmacognosy. The Pharm. D. program is jointly offered by the four constituent departments of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

The Department of Pharmacognosy comprises highly qualified, experienced, and skilled academic and research professionals who are actively engaged in teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision. Since 2019, the department has produced more than 20 M.Phil. scholars, while 03 Ph.D. scholars are currently pursuing their research under the supervision of the department\\\'s faculty members.

The department continues to contribute to pharmaceutical education and research, particularly in the areas of Pharmacognosy, medicinal plants, natural products, phytochemistry, and related fields.
