ABOUT

Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering

?

Biotechnology is highly interdisciplinary study and has evolved through the merger of basic and applied sciences. Through the biological processes, organisms, cells or cellular components are exploited to develop new technologies. With the advent of genetic engineering in late 1970s the research in biotechnology and genetics have developed rapidly because of new possibility to make changes in genetic material of the organisms. New technologies and products are developed every year within the area of health (development of new medicines, vaccines, and therapies), agriculture (genetically modified crops, biological treatments, biofuels), industry (production of chemicals, food, paper and textiles), and environment (removal of pollution, renewable energy generation).

The challenges of 21st century among the other things would require advance and applied research activities to promote and contribute to the scientific, technological and economic development of the country.

The setting up of a separate Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering gave a fresh impetus to the development of the multidisciplinary field of modern biotechnology and genetics. The necessity of Biotechnology was felt years back and in this regard Enzyme and Fermentation Research Laboratory was established in the Institute of Chemistry in 1989 by Professor (R) Dr. Muhammad Umar Dahot. The Center for Advanced Studies in Biotechnology, established in January 2002, and started M.Sc. Biotechnology program, the center was upgraded to Institute in April 2003, admissions in BS Genetics was started in 2004 and BS Biotechnology in 2014. During this period twenty-six (26) Ph.D. and thirty-five (35) M.Phil. degrees were awarded in Biotechnology & Genetics disciplines besides completion of various research projects sponsored by National and International funding agencies. The Institute has organized five (05) International symposia and five (05) training workshops on national level. So far more than three hundred research articles have been published by the faculty in National and International Journals.

The newly established Institute is providing research facilities in the area of Health Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Nano-biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Genetics. The Institute has established National and International linkages with highly reputed research organizations and Institutes, such as State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, East China University of Science & Technology, Shanghai, China, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Sciences, (CATAS), Hainan, China, ICCBS, University of Karachi, PCSIR, Karachi, NIA, Nuclear Institute of Agriculture (NIA), Tandojam, Medical Research Centre, LUMHS, Jamshoro.
The main goal of the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering is teaching and research.

  • To train needed scholars and researchers in the field of Biotechnology and Genetic and provide skilled manpower to the country.
  • To promote the Sciences of Biotechnology and Genetics in the country, through organizing Conferences / symposium, training courses, correspondence publishing research articles in high reputable Journals and books and articles.

The Institute is presently offering following undergraduate and postgraduate degrees’ programs: -
