Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering

The Centre For Advanced Studies in Biotechnology was established in January 2002 in pursuance of the syndicate Resolution No. 12 at its 122nd meeting held on 11.08.2001. The setting up of a separate Centre For Advanced Studies in Biotechnology gave a new impetus to the development of the multi disciplinary field of modem biotechnology. The status of Centre was upgrade to the present status, Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in April 2003. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Umar Dahot is the founder of the institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. The necessity of Biotechnology was felt years back and in this regard Enzyme and Fermentation Biotechnology Research Laboratory was established in 1989 and M.Sc. Biotechnology was introduced in 2000 in the Institute of Chemistry. To date, eight (08) Ph.D. and four (04) M.Phil degrees have been awarded.Four more Ph.D. scholars are engaged in writing their dissertation after completion of practical work.

Eleven (11) Research Projects have been successfully completed and the work on five research projects is in progress which were sponsored by National and International funding agencies such as Univ. of Sindh, Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), University Grants Commission (UGC), National Scientific Research and Development Board (NSRDB), Higher Education Commission (HEC), and Third World Academy of Science (TWAS), So far one Hundred and sixty research articles have been published in National and International Scientific Journals.

Biotechnology is broadly defined as a fusion between natural sciences (such as biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and genetics) and technological fields (such as engineering, manufacturing and computer science). In present days the boundaries of biotechnology are expanding with fantastic speed and its topic areas are turning into independent fields of specialization. The challenge of 21st Century among other things would require advance and applied research activities to promote and contribute to the scientific, technological, and economic development of the country. Newly established Institute is providing research facilities in the area of Plant Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, healthcare and Environment Biotechnology.

Student Enrolment:

Institute is presently offering 8 semester BS-Genetics, 4 semesters Master, M.Phil and Ph.D. program in Biotechnology. After completing basic requirement of pre-entry test. Nine (09) students have been admitted to M.Phil, eight (08) in Ph.D., forty (40) students to M.Sc. Biotechnology and two hundred and ten (210) in BS-Genetics
