Brief History: In developing countries of the world, department of Fisheries is of utmost economic value. Fish is the cheap source of animal protein for the diet of common people. So teaching and research in this field should have prime importance in education system. The subject of Fresh Water Biology and Fisheries deal with the aspect of Aquaculture, Fisheries Management, Fish Biology and Aquatic Botany. Establishment: The department was first conceived as a section of the Department of Zoology. However, it was 1973 that the department of Fresh Water Biology and Fisheries was established as an independent department at Allama I. I. Kazi campus, Jamshoro. Initially sharing accommodation with Botany, the department shifted to its new building in January 1993. Enrollment and Academic Activities: This is the only department in the country, offering degrees in the particular subjects. The teaching faculty of the present department consists of five Professors, one Associate professors, three Assistant Professors and two Lecturers. Out of 10 faculty members six holds Ph.D. degrees, one hold M.Phil and three have M.Sc degrees. Uptill now three M.Phil three Ph.D. degrees have been awarded from this department. M.Phil by courses work has been started in 2003. The number of students is gradually increasing in all classes. There are about 150 students in major classes is about 300. Higher education commission has approved and published the courses of Fresh Water Biology and fisheries in the form of a booklet. This course is to e adopted by various educational institutions for implementation. This course has already been implemented in this department in B.S. (4 years) program. A course for B.Sc (Pass) in colleges has already been approved by the Board of Studies and Faculty Board. Approval of Academic Council is awaited. This B.Sc. (Pass) course, when implemented in colleges of Sindh, will open new carrier opportunities for graduates of this department.
