The Department of Anthropology & Archaeology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro organized a lecture on ‘Archaeology of Balochistan’ under the guest speaker seminar series in which a German Archaeologist Dr. Ute Franke along with her two students from Italy and Germany presented the fieldwork findings of her archaeological projects conducted in Balochistan, Afghanistan and Iran. In her lecture, she said that Southeastern Balochistan was characterized by narrow river valleys which only occasionally provided space for alleviation, and thus agriculture adding that the catchment areas are smaller and, due to the high gradient of the tributaries, the seasonal floods are often destructive and wash away the soil. She further said in such a harsh and barren environment, irrigation through channels, qanats, or seasonal flooding was an essential prerequisite for settlement. “It thus developed early as an essential measure for the production of crops required by a growing population. The rising number of settlements from the beginning of settled life in the 6th millennium through the mid-third millennium BC witnesses the success of food production through farming and pastoralist”. Dr. Franke said. The lecture program was chaired by chairman of the department Prof. Mukhtiar Qazi and Rafique Wassan introduced the guests whereas a large number of students and faculty members of the Department attended the lecture and asked the question about archaeological and anthropological research. Later, German Archaeologist Dr Ute Franke and her students Elisa Cortesi from Italy and Carmen Gutschow from Germany had a meeting with the vice chancellor Dr. Nazir A. Mughal and discussed the developments of academic linkages between the University of Sindh and German Archaeology department in a bid to promote exchange program so that the students and faculty members of related departments of both the countries could get an opportunity to visit Pakistan and Germany. Dr. Mughal told the guests that Sindh University had best departments in the field of science including chemistry and geology departments and the German
