Dr.Mughal said that it is ironic that deposits discovered in mid eighties have yet to be utilized for power generation, although with limited
options available in facing energy crises, concentrated efforts should have been made to overcome all the impediments in its expiation and utilization. There is now some hope that its utilization will be initiated with coal gasification process going operational next month Dr.Mughal said adding that Memorandum of Understanding have also been singed with Chinese and British mining concerns for exploitation of Thar coal and power generation
is expected to start by the mid of 2012. The Vice Chancellor pointed out that such University-industry liaison is imperative for promotion of research and added that virtually all universities in the developed and developing countries world owe their research contribution that led to industrial innovative research and economic advancement to the University-Industry liaison and collaborative efforts. The Universities in Pakistan have been unfortunately lagged behind in this regard relying totally on government funding but due to financial crises we have reached an impasse Dr.Mughal said. Dr.Mughal stressed the need that Universities have now to develop liaison with industry to promote research and generate funds through the collaborative efforts. He said that Pakistan can get benefit for 100 years if the Thar coal deposits are fully exploited and added that government must take speedy efforts for its benefit and the latest technology can be helpful. He said that with exploiting Thar coal, the energy on cheaper rates will be available and it will also help to slowdown the migration from rural to urban.
