Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Prof. Dr. M. Raees Ahmed Director Graduates Studies University of Sindh clarifying in connection with news item that appeared in Dawn on Wednesday (24th November) has assured that there has been no change in policy for  enrolment to Ms/M.Phil program for the session 2011. In a clarification he said that pre entry test have now become mandatory for admissions in practically all universities throughout the Country, both for general and professional degree programs. While many Universities adopted the practice after 2002 following birth of Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Sindh University pioneered it in 1996 for Bachelor and Master degree programs and from 1998 for M.Phil degree program. Inspite of all attempts to proof need question papers errors do Creep in  perhaps during transfer of data on computer as per as the calculation of question is concerned , let me assure that all such questions were thoroughly checked afterwards and in all cases of genuine error/ omission, marks were equally distributed to benefit the candidates.  The University on its part, always eager to help deserving candidates desirous of pursuing research studies. The relaxation allowed in case of negative marks was an attempt to improve poor result when out of 708 appeared only 100 were passing. Therefore in order to avoid grace marks individually by lowering passing percentage by 45 percentage, relaxation across the board was allowed. It is but natural for candidates failing to qualify test to come-up with all sorts of straws to support their claim. It may be mentioned that for GRE (general) or GRE subject test conducted for admissions to MS/M.Phil programs by National Test Service (NTS), 50% is passing score: no relaxation is allowed. The University of Sindh has made efforts to improve/ maintain quality of research and save time of unsuccessful students not up to the marks to adhere somewhere to rules to achieve the objective and the press should support the stand rather than projecting one sided vision. It is unfortunate that students in earlier stages read only to pass examination instead of learning and knowledge and their inadequacy and grasp of is exposed when they write such test. The University has no claim to its perfection but at least some yardstick  is to be used at this stage.
