Institute of Women Development Studies
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Institute of Women Development Studies was established in 1994 with the approval of Ministry of Women Development. Dr. Fouzia Jafferi was appointed as its Co-coordinator and later, Prof. Parveen Shah was appointed its 1st Director. The Institute has started M.Sc Home Economics classes for the girl students of this region who earlier had to go to Karachi or Lahore, to get M.Sc degree in Home Economics. Besides this, the Institute has started Master programme in women studies and post graduate diploma in community development.
A number of short certificate courses for various skills for income generation have been started for girls students.
The Institute has introduced Women Studies as a new subject as Minor I & II in BS 4-yr. program in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Sindh, Jamshoro. Furthermore we are planning to introduce BS 4-yr Gender Studies program from 2012.
The Institute regularly organizes Seminars, Workshops and Field trips for the awareness, upliftment and betterment of women in general and of rural women in particular; free Medical camps are also organized frequently to facilitate the women folk.
The Institute publishes Annual Research Journal “The Women”, the Institute publishd two Souvenirs and two issues of above mentioned journal. One of our faculty member Prof. Dr. Parveen Shah has authored a book “Spot Light on Rural Women in Sindh: An inquiry into the socio-economic and demographic charectistics”. Furthermore the faculty has also been contributing regularly in National and International Journals related to Women and Gender issues and allied fields. They have been also participating in Seminars/ Workshops at National and International level.
The Institute maintains a small seminar library, containing 750 books and various Journals on different subjects relating to women.
The Institute enjoys good reputation in academic community inside and outside the University because of the regular participation in academic and extra curricular activities.
